Mancuso goes out as Wonder Woman
On the eve of the 2018 PyeonChang Olympic Games, American alpine legend Julia Mancuso bowed out the only way she knows how: Loud and in style. Donning a Wonder Woman speed suit complete with a flapping red cape, the Olympic gold medalist crushed her final downhill in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy. After years of hip issues, and finally missing the cut for this year's Olympics, the 33-year-old might be hanging up the race sticks for good, but I have a funny feeling the Spandex is here to stay.
Japanese volcanic eruption causes avalanche, kills 1
Japan has been effin' deep, but in what can only be described as an absolute worst-case, no-freaking-thanks scenario, one skier was killed and over a dozen injured when a volcanic eruption launched volcanic rocks and kicked off an in-bounds avalanche at Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort, on Japan's main island. Less than 100 miles from Tokyo, Mount Kusatsu-Shirane erupted in the middle of the ski day Monday, hurling rocks and ash over a kilometer and trapping more than 80 people in the ski area gondola. According to CNN, the resort will remain closed over fears of more eruptions. Yikes.
Gear Watch: The newest freeski planks…no, seriously
Tired of staying up with the latest technology? One freeskier takes ski innovation back to basics this week, mounting up a pair of 2x4s and sending it straight to the park. Perhaps the most torsionally rigid skis in the game (read: literally boards), they actually hold their own. Next up, OR.
Instagram Shoutout: @ParkCityAssholeParking
Since five-fourths of you guys already live on Instagram, I figured it was a good time to highlight a few of the accounts that are hitting all of the right notes these days. Let's start things off jaded, with one of the funniest and most comprehensive proof that skiers really do suck at parking. Coming in lukewarm from Park City, Utah, here's an inside look at the epidemic sweeping the film industry's favorite ski town. Thanks, @ParkCityAssholeParking.
