The 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour has crowned its champions. The final stop of the tour and World Championships wrapped up yesterday at Snowbird, Utah. A huge crowd and perfect weather kept the energy high, and the skiers sent it one last time as they fought for the World Championship title as well as the McConkey Cup for the overall tour winner.
Lars Chickering-Ayers won for the men with his signature speed and no hesitation launching off the biggest features on the North Baldy venue. Drew Stoecklein also charged hard, finishing a close second. Third place went to Snowbird local Oakley White-Allen who sent the crowd into a frenzy with his unique lines and humongous airtime.
All of the super-finalists threw down, pushing the whole field to go bigger and faster. Nick Greener barely missed the podium with a massive air into the "Broom Closet" that left many in the crowd shaking their heads in disbelief. There were tons of flips and spins as well that really showed how the athletes are progressing. And, of course, there were some excellent crashes like Chopo Diaz's violent ragdoll right in front of the crowd.
On the ladies side, local shredder Angel Collinson won with a smooth, fluid style and a unique double air at the bottom. Returning champion Crystal Wright took second and Emily Teague was third, both of whom skied consistently and aggressively.
With her win, Angel Collinson also took home the overall tour title, completing an excellent season that included podiums in Revelstoke, Crested Butte, Kirkwood, and Snowbird. The overall men's champion was Arne Backstrom, beating out Griffin Post by a single point.
