Vail's single-day, window lift ticket hit $209 over the holiday season, with Aspen close behind at $179. This sure isn’t breaking down any barriers of entry to our sport. Of course, if you’re smart, you’re saving a few bucks by buying your tickets online in advance, or using a multi-resort pass. according to National Ski Areas Association, season passes accounted for about 43 percent of skier and snowboarder visits last season.

Boy survives after 40-minute avalanche burial
The Christmas miracle arrived a couple days late but not a minute too soon for 12-year-skier this season. After being swept downhill and buried by an avalanche beyond the ropes of La Plagne ski resort in France, the boy was rescued after 40 minutes underneath the snow. Skiing without a beacon, the skier was located by an avalanche dog, and only suffered a broken leg in the harrowing ordeal.
