David Wise went home from the ESPY Awards Wednesday in Los Angeles with some new hardware after winning Best Male Action Sports Athlete. Wise, who won his second consecutive Olympic halfpipe gold at Pyeongchang, was also nominated for Best Male Olympian this year, an award that ultimately went to snowboarder Shaun White.
“I think I need to invent a new word that encompasses surprise, thankfulness, excitement, and disbelief! That's what I'm feeling right now,” wrote Wise, 28, on an Instagram post.
The Reno-native had previously been nominated in the same categories, but this was his first win. Several other skiers received ESPY nominations this year, including Mikaela Shiffrin who was up for Best Female Olympian and Best Female Athlete. Shiffrin lost both awards to 18-year-old snowboarder Chloe Kim who also won Best Female Action Sports Athlete.
