Tens of thousands of photographs are submitted every year to POWDER. Which doesn’t make selecting the handful that stand apart easy. But the process goes deeper than that. It starts the night before the photograph was taken, when plans are set to go skiing. It includes the editing process, the submission, and on the part of the editorial department at POWDER, narrowing down the selection.
These final nominees represent the best of 2016 from a handful of our top contributing photographers. There were so many others that could have made the cut. Every year, this is one of the hardest decisions among the staff. Alas, these five are the photos that encompass everything we look for: light, composition, a moment of precision from both the photographer and the skier. But more than anything, they embody a feeling. It’s an intangible feeling. At its best, a photo tells the true story of a moment. They are such fleeting moments. For a photographer and a skier to capture it as an image--well, that’s what great photography is all about.
Speaking for skiers worldwide, we are grateful for our photographers’ vision, their tireless efforts, and the talented skiers they work with out in the mountains.
