At the 17th annual Powder Awards, held in Breckenridge, Colorado, on December 8, 2016, Sammy Carlson in The Sammy C Project by Teton Gravity Research won the award for Best Air.

Read a recap of the biggest night in skiing.

“When I first showed up at X Games, I was really hyped,” said Carlson. “The same year I won the gold was the Olympics, and everyone thought I should go that direction. I'd go out into the backcountry and meet some of the most influential people in my life, and this is what skiing is about. I wanted to stay true to that, if I was going against what I was feeling as a skier. Freesking isn't about a competition at all, it's about being in the mountains. I wanted to stay true to the sport, but I really, really believed that's what the sport was about.”
