    Shashka Jacket

    $649.00

    BUY NOW

    Manufacturer's Description

The Arc’teryx Shashka Jacket is a simple answer to the inhospitable terrain where backcountry skiers venture. At first glance, the shell almost looks too simple. It’s so lightweight and there are no overt features beyond a few pockets and a hood. But don’t overthink it. To build a minimalist tool for backcountry skiing, the team of designers at Arc’teryx headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia, already did all the thinking for you.

The Shashka is made with Gore-Tex Pro, which Arc’teryx trusts as the most water repellent, lightweight, breathable, durable material on the planet. And they did the research, going so far as to rub scratchy velcro on the material to test how long it will last against abrasion.

Next, Arc’teryx designers tailored the Shashka specifically for the backcountry and ski touring by adding more range of motion in the sleeves. This is a subtle, yet key feature that you can’t see outright in the jacket. But you can feel it.

“I moved my arms in full rotations, freely and openly, while the rest of the jacket stayed in place,” said Powder Posse skier Julie Brown. “It did not lift up, expose my middle, or tighten the material on my back. The sleeve cuffs are perfectly flared to go over my gloves. Just like a custom-made suit, a well-tailored ski jacket makes all the difference in comfort and confidence. Fit is the detail that matters the most for a jacket to feel invisible as soon as you zip it up—which is what you want when you need to focus on the descent ahead in the backcountry.”

All said and done, the Shashka is a high-end, quality shell for backcountry skiing made by a company obsessed with superior, minimal design and that skiers can trust with a $700 investment, paid back in full with many, many ski days. Also, it should be said that while Arc’teryx intended this shell to be worn in the backcountry, it’s perfectly suited for layering and skiing inbounds, too.

    Shashka Pant

    $650.00

    BUY NOW

    Manufacturer's Description

Just like the Shaska Jacket, the Arc’teryx Shaska Pants are a piece of minimalist design and superior function for backcountry skiing. The proof is in the tailoring. Articulation in the knees and the seat allow the wearer to bend down and buckle their boots without the hem of the pants lifting or the waist gapping at the small of the back.

Made with Gore-Tex C-Knit, the Shaska Pants are a lightweight, fully waterproof shell with removable suspenders, so you can wear them as low-hitting bibs or as pants. The features are intentional, and not many, including a zippered pocket on the bib, a pocket on the right thigh with key leashes, and a pocket on the left leg that has more volume. Burly double weave fabric on the interior cuff protects the pants on the bootpack against wayward crampons that threaten to rip a hole. Side vents with two-way zippers dump heat fast on the skin track.

“These pants fit a curvy woman’s body effortlessly (and can move easily),” said Powder POSSE member Siri Wieringa. “Amazing placement for pockets (they were easy to zip and it was super easy to reach for items in the pocket.)” Importantly, Siri added, “I can zip the pants off to go pee without having to take the bib or jacket off.” Siri’s only qualm was the fact that the Shashka only comes in one color—navy. Now if only women’s jeans were given the same amount of thought and detail.

    Stinger Pant

    $499.00

    BUY NOW

    Manufacturer's Description

It’s widely understood among core skiers that Arc’teryx makes some of the finest quality products in the business. You’ll pay a pretty penny, but when you’re in the middle of a maelstrom, it’s worth every cent. Such is the Stinger Pant, a lightweight but tough garment made from three-layer Gore-Tex Pro, the most durable waterproof-breathable fabric Gore makes.

“I would wear these pants every day: touring, on the mountain, snowmobiling, and for fondue events,” says Aspen native and POSSE member JF Bruegger. “Clean, simple, and washable.”

The pants include double side zips for ventilation and large volume zippered thigh pockets. The one drawback is that the pants don’t have an ideal pocket for your phone or other bulky items, as the deep thigh pockets reach down to just above the knee. The clean and minimalist hip design, which includes a removable belt, is excellent for wearing a backpack or harness. So leave your phone at home, or put it in a jacket pocket.

    Tantalus Jacket

    $675.00

    BUY NOW

    Manufacturer's Description

A three-layer Gore-Tex jacket with a flannel tricot backing, the Tantalus is a workhorse built for frigid days at the resort. Arc’teryx bills it as a hybrid freeride, meaning it’s more tuned to riding lifts and skiing big vertical than it is for long missions in the backcountry.

The fit is roomy for layering up, while the cut is a little longer, so it doesn’t ride up with you’re riding down. The durability lends itself to wearing a pack and busting through the woods, and the breathability means you won’t shake-n-bake on traverses or short hikes into the nearby backcountry. Like all Arc’teryx pieces, the Tantalus has a clean, minimalist design, but packs a high tech punch.

The one miss is that it doesn’t have a pass pocket. Otherwise, as POSSE member Dane Weister says, “I’d be happy wearing this in the resort, touring, or walking around on a rainy day.”
