Tahoe Snowboarder Triggers Large Backcountry Avalanches

Desk pop!

Tim Humphreys, a Tahoe snowboarder, posted POV footage of a slide right below him, that he captioned, "Desk Pop 💥".

Based in Truckee, Humphreys spends a lot of time exploring the mountains around Tahoe, and some recent POV footage posted to his Instagram shows why we always need to exercise caution when going off-piste.

Tim rose to fame through his POV footage of his riding, but this one is a little less celebratory. Humphreys captioned the video, "Some… mitigation in the backcountry yesterday."

Tahoe was hit with the storm of the season (so far) last week and coming into this week as well, so it makes sense that the new snowpack comes with safety concerns.

Palisades Tahoe shut down the upper mountain during the thick of the storm, even shutting down the entire mountain on Sunday afternoon.

In the backcountry, there is no Ski Patrol force to bomb or test the snowpack for skiability before people set out, so it's up to the individual to have avalanche safety under their belt before strapping those skins on.

Though Tim doesn't ski, he does snowboard, and the same rules apply.

Plus, in the off-season, Tim surfs and skates, so it only makes sense that he rides instead of skis in the wintertime.

Watch his Full Part from 2020 below.

Does this make you want to take an avalanche refresher course?

Or maybe your first one ever?

Tim's footage is a pretty good reminder that things can and do happen when you go outside. Good and bad. You just have to be prepared.
