October Snow Forecasted To Hit New York and Vermont
It's only the beginning of October, but snow is expected to return to the high peaks of New York and Vermont in the afternoon of Wednesday, October 9th, 2024.
Before you get too excited about the potential for skiing, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Burlington, Vermont is only forecasting a dusting to one inch of snow to fall at elevation. See the forecasted map below.
The NWS clarifies that this predictive map is still in the 'Experimental' phase:
"The purpose of these experimental probabilistic snowfall products is to provide customers and partners a range of snowfall possibilities, in complement to existing NWS deterministic snowfall graphics, to better communicate forecast uncertainties during winter weather events. For more information visit this project's Product/Service Description Document, and please provide us your feedback here."
With that said, the NWS says there's a 60-100% chance of 0.1 inches of snow to accumulate in the targeted areas. The confidence in accumulation is highest southeast of Saranac Lake, New York and east of Middlebury, Vermont. See below.
The forecasted storm won't be the first snowfall of the season for New York's Adirondack Mountains or Vermont's Green Mountains, but it's a sign that the start of the season is getting closer.
Killington, which is located near the forecasted snow area in central Vermont, will most likely be the first ski resort in the state to open. Nicknamed 'The Beast of the East', the resort is known to make snow at the earliest opportunity. Keep an eye out for Killington to test their snowmaking machines during the snow storm if conditions are favorable.
POWDER will be paying attention to the Instagram account of Plattsburgh, New York based skier Wesley Poe. Poe and friends traveled to Whiteface, New York back in mid-September to slide on snow and rime ice accumulation to notch their first day of the season. We won't be surprised if the crew returns to Whiteface or another tall peak in New York to potentially ski some real snow.
