Two Dead in Grand Teton National Park Avalanche

Backcountry skiers Steve Romeo and Chris Onufer perish in deadly slide

An avalanche in Grand Teton National Park has claimed the lives of Steve Romeo, founder of the blog TetonAT, and Chris Onufer, a longtime Jackson Hole Mountain Resort employee. The bodies of the two backcountry skiers, reported overdue from a trek on Ranger Peak yesterday, were recovered today by a Teton County Search and Rescue team. According to local news reports, the skiers were reported missing after they were overdue from a day’s ski on Ranger Peak, a remote mountain just north of Mount Moran on the west side of Jackson Lake. Romeo and Onufer were considered two of the most experienced backcountry skiers in the Tetons, regularly reporting on their steep-skiing missions for Romeo’s blog. They were part of the bedrock of Jackson skiing, and will be deeply missed. Powder is saddened by the loss and sends our sympathy to the family and friends of Romeo and Onufer, and the Jackson community at large.
