From Colorado Ski Country USA -- DENVER (Oct. 13, 2011) -- More Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resorts launched into the 2011/12 ski season this week, pushing Colorado to the front of the pack for October ski destinations, and further solidifying Colorado as the top choice for winter recreation. Arapahoe Basin opened their lifts for the season this morning at 9 a.m., Loveland Ski Area will open their lifts for the season on Friday, Oct. 14, and Wolf Creek will open for its second weekend of skiing and riding on Saturday, Oct. 15.
Arapahoe Basin's snowmaking team worked relentlessly during the past week to produce quality conditions for today's opening. The snowmakers' efforts were complemented by early snowfalls in the area, including several fresh inches in the last few days. Skiers and riders enjoyed an 18 inch base, and Black Mountain Express escorted guests to the intermediate High Noon run, and several features in the High Divide Terrain Park.
Colorado is known for having one of the longest ski seasons. Perched on the Continental Divide, Arapahoe Basin and Loveland enjoy an elevation conducive to making snow and keeping conditions fresh for long periods of time. With a late season July 4 closing after one of the longest seasons in 14 years, Arapahoe Basin opened today having only been closed 100 days.
For CSCUSA, having three ski areas open signifies ski season is here and that resorts are ready to welcome skiers and riders. "After an impressive season that extended for 10 months last year, it's exciting that resorts are starting lifts and offering skiing in October," said Melanie Mills, president and CEO of CSCUSA. "Having three resorts open at this point in the year gives people even more options and hopefully encourages people to take advantage of the natural playgrounds Colorado offers."
Ski season in Colorado is an ideal opportunity to be with family and friends outside, partake in the state's signature sports or learn a new outdoor activity. For more information about this year's ski season, resort openings, or Colorado Ski Country USA, please visit www.ColoradoSki.com.
