A new avalanche airbag from Scott Sports, the Backcountry Patrol AP 30, is operated with a battery and a fan. Unlike the Black Diamond Jetforce, which uses a lithium battery, the Scott Backcountry Patrol AP 30 is hooked up to a super capacitor battery, which essentially absorbs a ton of energy in a short time. You can charge this airbag off a USB port, and there’s an option to add AA batteries if you want to give the pack a backup charge. With AA batteries and a full charge, the airbag has a storage life of three months. It weighs 5.88 pounds, and will hit the market at about $1,100. —Julie Brown
