The editors went live on Facebook yesterday to talk about The Future Issue, our October 2016 edition of the magazine. Inside the issue, the second of our 45th volume, we talked about the future of our sport and the skiers who will carry us there—starting with our cover shot by Alric Ljunghager of Lucas Stal Madison, one of the members of the styley urban crew, The Bunch, out of Norway.
In “An Unrefined Nature,” Sierra Davis caught a ride to Colorado’s Monarch Mountain where the old-school vibe may just be what skiers are looking for when it seems so many resorts are going for bigger, better, faster. Julie Brown shares her opinion that while skiers are 70 percent white at present, the sport needs to diversify and be more inclusive if it’s going to survive. Which is why we assigned Katie Baker to write her feature “The Fellowship,” about the National Brotherhood of Skiers—a collective of ski clubs whose main goal has been to get more African-Americans on skis. Abigail Barronian went on the road to write “The New Bohemians,” for which she found groups of young people making the skiing life happen, keeping the dream alive, despite its increasing challenges. We wrapped it up with our favorite gear, and a look at the 2017 Apparel Guide for the best jackets and pants of the year. Thanks to the live viewers who sent in their questions, and to our fellow Sam for the cold beers. Thanks for tuning in, we’ll go live again next month.
