Vasu Sojitra, the subject of a T-Bar films documentary titled Out on a Limb, heard that a group of skiers with a reservation at The Bench Hut in the Sawtooth Mountains had backed out at last minute. If Bozeman-based Sojitra and friends could rally a team and throw together a quick plan, they could snag “the holy grail of Idaho huts” for a trip of the season. So they did what you do, and made it work. “Without a doubt the answer was yes,” Sojitra wrote on his blog. A few days later, they skinned five hours into the Idaho backcountry, breaking trail in two feet of snow, to find chest-deep powder and sunny skies for days.
“The hut was warm, the food was plenty, the mountains were beautiful, the snow was deep, the decisions were safe, and the company was priceless,” Sojitra said.
