Jalpak Tash: A Kyrgyzstan Epic
In a country that is 80 percent mountains, skiing is offering a glimmer of hope for the future
Kyrgyzstan is a place a lot of people don’t know much about. Before The North Face athletes Leah Evans, Izzy Lynch, and Mike Hopkins arrived to ski in the Tien Shan mountains, neither did they. But in a country that is 80 percent mountains, skiing is offering glimmers of hope for the future. The crew embarked on a trip that is part of a project to help generate employment opportunities for local Kyrgyz people after the collapse of the Soviet Union crippled the economy in the early ‘90s. Ski touring out of a traditional nomadic yurt, skiing perfect powder and first descents became a bonus at the end of an epic cultural adventure through the heart of Central Asia.
