THE WORLD’S BEST FREESKIERS RETURN TO KIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT,
CALIFORNIA, FOR THE SUBARU NORTH AMERICAN FREESKIING CHAMPIONSHIPS,
MARCH 3-7, 2010

SKIERS TO BATTLE FOR TOUR POINTS IN THE SECOND TO LAST STOP ON THE
2010 SUBARU FREESKIING WORLD TOUR

Kirkwood, California, March 3, 2010–
The world’s best freeskiers return to Kirkwood Mountain Resort, California, for the second to last stop on the 2010 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour.  Freeskiing’s elite will battle it out in the Sierra snow March 3-7 for the 13th Annual Subaru North American Freeskiing Championships (NAFC).??

Competitors from around the globe will vie for a $20,000 prize purse. With approximately 200 competitors attending, the current tour leaders Griffin Post, Frenchman Julien Lopez, Arne Backstrom, and Jess McMillian, will up the ante as they fight for their lead positions. Also in attendance will be top Subaru Freeskiing World Tour competitors Jacqui Edgerly, Claudia Bouvier, and Whit Boucher.

“The Subaru North American Freeskiing Championships are something we look forward to every season at Kirkwood. It’s unbelievable to see some of the world’s best skiers take on the terrain of the Cirque,” said Tim Cohee, Senior Vice President of Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Kirkwood is excited to have the Subaru NAFC back again to test the limits of the world’s best competitors. Designed to cater to the motivation, talent and skill of world-class big mountain skiers, Kirkwood attracts big mountain ski competitors from around the world.

The proposed venues for qualifying will be on Lookout Vista with the finals being held on the forbidden terrain of The Cirque. The permanently closed Cirque offers a variety of untouched tight lines and huge airs. The venue is visible from Devil’s Corral at the base of Vista and the Cirque. As always there is plenty of front-row seating to watch the competitors put everything on the line.  Competing on The Cirque has been a proving ground for the best athletes in our sport and this year they are going to throw it down harder than ever.

Weather permitting, Mountain Sports International will produce a live webcast of the final round of competition currently slated for Sunday, March 7. MSI will also be producing daily videos and posting live photo and blog coverage of the event throughout the weekend on www.freeskiingworldtour.com [http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MountainSportsIntern/699f61b142/2b17076975/8da3166892]

”The Cirque”  Venue

“We reserve the terrain of the Cirque for a select few who we know are able to handle it, which is why we only open it twice a year,” said Julie Koster, Marketing Director at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

With one of the deepest snow packs in the country, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is more than ready to host the world’s best big mountain skiers. With over 250 days of sunshine a year, and with more than 30% of Kirkwood’s terrain catering to advanced expert riders, Kirkwood is the ultimate big mountain venue and host to The Subaru North American Freeskiing Championships

Located just 177 miles from the Bay Area along scenic Highway 88, Kirkwood Mountain base elevation of 7800 feet assures skiers more annual snowfall than any other Tahoe resort. Kirkwood is recognized by winter purists and national media alike for the quality of its snow and terrain variety: it was ranked No. 10 in the country by Ski Magazine (October 2009), the only South Tahoe resort ranked in the top 10. Readers of Silicon Valley’s The Wave magazine selected Kirkwood as Resort of Choice for Winter 2008/2009.
