Bryan Heisuer and Ben Vangoul Take Gold at Sun Peak Resort’s Helly Hansen Big
Mountain Battle Despite Whiteout Conditions
DELTA, B.C. (March 2, 2010) — North & South’s Bryan Heisuer and Ben Vangoul took gold at Sun Peaks Resort’s Helly Hansen Big Mountain Battle with a time of 2:10:49, despite snowy, low-visibility conditions that caused other competitors navigational problems.
Fifty-one teams turned up to compete at the event — the most to compete on the tour to date — and Canada’s Olympic spirit was on full display. Captains of Compost’s Todd Colliver and Robert Beaudry grabbed silver, more than four minutes later, with a time of 2:14:58. Team Jackson’s Rob Garrett and Jackson Smeltzer took bronze with a time of 2:17:50.
The blustery race day challenged the 102 competitors to an intense, big-mountain course, designed by Sun Peak Resort’s own ski patrollers. Each team was tracked using FLAIK GPS, a unique tracking device that provided race officials with real-time data, including ascents and descents, on each team. Hawk & Shep’s Dan Shephard and Jason Hawker stole the Fastest Hike away from the race leaders with a time of 7:44.
Heisuer and Vangoul won an all-expense-paid trip to Aspen/Snowmass where they’ll square off against other BMB winners in the final Battle in the Bowls, March 28. But before that final showdown can occur, the Big Mountain Battle will make stops at Revelstoke Mountain Resort, B.C. (Mar. 6); Stevens Pass Ski Area, WA (Mar. 13); and Smugglers’ Notch Resort, VT (Mar. 20); and send three more two-person teams on all- expense-paid trips to the Aspen/Snowmass event.
Cost for the event is $75 per team and includes two Helly Hansen LIFA® base layers valued at $45 each. For more info, please go to www.bigmountainbattle.com
