Salt Lake City, Utah- March 12, 2010—For the first time in the history of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT), Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, will host the final stop of the tour on the famed venues Silver Fox and North Baldy. An international field of the world’s best skiers will descend upon the Wasatch Mountains next week, March 16-21, to battle for overall World Tour points and for the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships title. Registration filled up in a matter of minutes, proving that the 13th Annual Subaru Freeskiing World Championships is one of the most coveted events in freeskiing.
“We’re honored to be hosting some of the best big mountain skiers from around the world for the final stop of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “I’m confident that Snowbird’s terrain and snow conditions will live up to the caliber that everyone expects from a World Championship venue.”
With approximately 200 athletes competing, the reigning Subaru Freeskiing World tour leaders Griffin Post of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Jacqui Edgerly of Aspen, Colorado, will battle it out on Snowbird’s extreme terrain. Also in attendance will be the 2010 Subaru FWT points leaders Angel Collinson of Snowbird, Arne Backstrom of Squaw Valley, and Aaron Schmidt of Fernie, B.C.
”I’m very excited to compete at the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships”, said current Subaru FWT leader Griffin Post. ”My goal is to win the tour more than the event. For sure I want and need to do well in the event, but to be the first guy to win the McConkey Cup is the ultimate aspiration.”
“To honor our good friend and legendary skier Shane McConkey—who founded this sport and the IFSA—the overall Subaru FWT champions will be awarded with the McConkey Cup”, said Mountain Sport International President Adam Comey. This sport was his dream and we intend to keep it thriving for years to come.”
Located 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is North America’s most accessible year-round resort. Snowbird offers 15 restaurants and eateries, 2,500 acres of skiable terrain, North America’s only skier tunnel and averages 500 inches of snow per year.
