Fourth annual backcountry ski festival draws powderhounds from BC, Pacific Northwest, for clinics, contests, comps, and “cold smoke” snow!
Celebrate the culture of backcountry pursuits amongst breathtaking scenery and world-renowned snow at Whitewater Winter Resort in Nelson, British Columbia. The fourth annual Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest (presented by Arc’teryx, Whitewater Winter Resort, and Mountain Gear) is a grass-roots gathering where both experienced and debutant backcountry skiers and snowboarders can celebrate the culture of backcountry pursuits amongst breathtaking scenery and world renowned snow.
Whitewater Winter Resort’s terrain combined with the Selkirk’s legendary snow provides fantastic opportunities for all levels to ski, learn, compete, and celebrate off-piste and backcountry riding.
So, what’s Coldsmoke all about? (How much time ya got?)
- 1)SKI, SNOWBOARD and LEARN from the pros! Some of the top names in backcountry skiing, telemarking, and safety will be on hand to lend their expertise. Hit Steeps in the Backcountry with Eric Pehota. Ladies, join Naheed Henderson for her Women in the Mountains clinic. Get tips on route-finding and reading terrain with a top-notch certified guide. There are skills-improving clinics offered in both Alpine Touring and Telemark technique.
- 2)Coldsmoke is more than just playing in the snow; it celebrates all aspects of mountain culture and welcomes newcomers to winter backcountry activities, too. The Coldsmoke Opener kicks off at the Capital Theater on Friday evening, with screenings of ski films from around the world. To keep things interesting, local microbrews from Nelson Brewing Company will be on tap. On Saturday, it’s the triple header of the Buff-Eh dinner, Cold Shot Foto Face Off, and Crazy Rager after party, featuring local live bands.
- 3)Sign up and participate in one of three super-sweet contests – you can even enter the G3 skigraphiks competition in advance. More energetic types can enter the Valhalla Pure Powderkeg Booter competition, the SCARPA Poker Run, Gerick’s Dually Slalom and the ROAM Randonee Rally.
- 4)It’s not cold the Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest for nothing. As of Feb 1st, Whitewater is boasting a base of just over 200 centimeters. For our American attendees, that is over six feet of snow. There’s always powder at Whitewater. You just might have to earn your turns to find it.
