On Thursday, the American Society of Magazine Editors named POWDER a finalist for a National Magazine Award. ASME recognized The Human Factor as one of five nominees in the multimedia category, which honors digital storytelling and the integration of magazine media. POWDER is up against The Atavist, Consumer Reports, Slate, and The Texas Observer in partnership with The Guardian.

The Human Factor, written by David Page, is a five-part series presented by Black Diamond that addresses the psychological factors that led to a number of tragic, or near tragic, avalanches last winter.

Known as the Ellies, the most prestigious event in publishing received 1,548 submissions from 263 publications. The judges, which include journalism educators in addition to 340 magazine editors, art directors, and photography editors, nominated 66 publications for 24 awards. New York magazine has the most nominations with 10. Bon Appetit and The New Yorker received six nominations, while The Atlantic, GQ, and Virginia Quarterly Review each had four. POWDER is one of eight publications, including Grantland and Politco, nominated for the first time.

ASME will announce the winners on February 2 at the New York Marriott Marquis.
