The POWDER Design Fellowship

POWDER is now accepting applications for the 2017 Design Fellowship position. This person will assist the Art Director with the delivery of the four product guides in Volume 47 of Powder. This is a five-month, paid position based in Carlsbad, California, beginning June 2017 and concluding mid October 2017. Payment will be determinant on completion of guides.

First and foremost, candidates should be skiers, or ambassadors of the outdoors. Desired applicants include students/graduates who are eager to get their foot in the door of the publishing industry. They should have strong design skills, an interest in print media, and a natural curiosity for the design of the world around them. They must be observant, motivated, and hard working. This person must contribute to the creative, positive energy here at POWDER HQ. The fellow will work closely with the editors at POWDER, gain hands-on experience at an award-winning magazine, and receive invaluable exposure to the ski industry.

Fellowship responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The main focus of the fellowship is the construction of the advertorial content for our four product guides: Buyer’s Guide, Apparel Guide, Resort/Heli Guide, and Holiday Gift Guide. This includes correct translation of supplied client text, logos, and images into its appropriate layout and final destination. They are responsible for the maintaining consistent contact with our sales team, and supplying updated PDF proofs to our Sales Team for client approval. Other responsibilities will include various projects assisting the Art Director, and gaining insight into the overall creative process of a publication.

Experience Requirements:

One to two years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience with a publication/design firm. Excellent communication skills, a good understanding of typographic, print, and web techniques. The most desired candidate is one who is prepared to invest their time and passion in something they care about, and also gain knowledge and experience from a mentor.

Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Self-motivator capable of producing high quality work within strict deadlines.
Excellent communication skills.
Understand this is not a 9-5 job. It is a lifestyle decision.
Passion for skiing and knowledge of POWDER magazine.
A love for the outdoors.
A good sense of humor.
And an open mind.
