Sammy Carlson Cleans Up

The winner of Best Male Performance at the 17th Annual Powder Awards is Sammy Carlson

At the 17th annual Powder Awards, held in Breckenridge, Colorado, on December 8, 2016, Sammy Carlson in The Sammy C Project by Teton Gravity Research won the award for Best Male Performance.

“The thing I want to say is, ‘Don’t gain the world and lose your soul. Wisdom is better than silver and gold.’ I’m still hyped on skiing and to be able to push the sport,” says Carlson. “To me, it’s just about having fun.”

Read a recap of the biggest night in skiing.

“When I first showed up at X Games, I was really hyped. The same year I won the gold was the Olympics, and everyone though I should go that direction. I’d go out into the backcountry and meet some of the most influential people in my life, and this is what skiing is about. I wanted to stay true to that, if I was going against what I was feeling as a skier. Freeskiing isn’t about a competition at all, it’s about being in the mountains. I wanted to stay true to the sport, but I really, really believed that’s what the sport was about.”
