A heavy snowstorm during last weekend’s Grand Prix at Breckenridge, Colorado forced a jury decision to cancel the slopestyle skiing finals and postpone the halfpipe finals twice. Despite the near-blizzard conditions, two U.S. halfpipe skiers secured nominations to the Olympic team.
David Wise and Maddie Bowman took home wins for men’s and women’s halfpipe in the finals on Sunday, and their victories earned them a nomination to the first-ever U.S. Freeskiing Olympic Team.
“The pressure is off for me now,” says Wise. “Now the pressure is off I can work on my runs a little more and maybe work on some things I still need to hone in for Sochi.”
Since the slopestyle finals were called off, FIS Freestyle rules used the athlete’s qualification standings to stand in as official results, giving Bobby Brown and Keri Herman the win. Nick Goepper is currently the only slopestyle athlete to secure a spot on the U.S. Freeskiing Olympic Team.
The next sanctioned U.S. freeskiing event is this weekend, January 17-18, in Park City, Utah.
