For immediate release:
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (Nov. 4, 2013)- The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series will open athlete registration for the 2013-14 season tomorrow Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 10 a.m. MST on TheNorthFacePPOS.com. Registration is anticipated to fill extremely fast after opening.
The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series’ (PPOS) three stops will include halfpipe at Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 6-8), halfpipe and slopestyle at Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 13-16, 2014), and Stratton Mountain Resort (Feb. 20-22, 2014), which will feature a slopestyle competition and rail jam. The Copper Mountain stop will serve as a last chance qualifier into the U.S. Grand Prix series, which is the Olympic qualification series for freeskiing athletes in the U.S. and will ultimately select the athletes who will compete for the U.S. Olympic Freeskiing team at the Sochi Winter Olympics in February 2014. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Winter Games to include freeskiing, halfpipe, and slopestyle.
The Copper Mountain and Stratton Mountain stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned events with Copper Mountain designated as a NorAm Cup. All three PPOS events are also part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule.
Prequalified athletes must indicate interest by registering. Prequalification is based off of the 2012-13 AFP end of year standings. The top 30 men in slopestyle, top 20 men in halfpipe, top 20 women in slopestyle, and top 20 women in halfpipe will be prequalified. Any 2012-13 PPOS competitor who finished in the top three at any stop is also prequalified for the 2014 season. Athletes must be 14 years of age or older to compete as of December 31, 2013. A list of prequalified athletes is available online.
