TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival Returns to Whistler
10 Years Young
72hr Filmmaker Showdown and anniversary event Film 10 will be far funnier and more interesting than that Hollywood awards ceremony, who shall remain nameless
From TWSSF — Whistler, B.C. — Notorious for its hilarious MC, talented filmmakers and energetic and electric atmosphere, the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s flagship arts event, the 72hr Filmmaker Showdown, is back with a vengeance this year, April 15-24. Climbing, and possibly topping, the ranks of short filmmaking competitions, the Filmmaker Showdown has upped the ante and contestant incentive by doubling the prize money for Best in Show to $10,000 for 2011. Event Producer Lilli Clark says, “handing out our largest cash prize to date for the 72hr Filmmaker Showdown means that with $10,000 on the line the filmmaker crews will be out in droves and taking over the village once again on the first weekend of the festival. It’s a fantastic kick off to a week full of madness and we can’t wait to see what the filmmakers come up with this year.”
And with this popular event having sold out in a record 1 and a half weeks – a feat in itself – there are only 2 weeks left for teams to register online to be part of this at capacity event. For those who have been left wondering where those 1,800 tickets went, worry no more! There will be opportunities to win tickets through Pique Newsmagazine, WAG members can buy limited numbers and be sure to check online for details. For those handy with a camera, don’t miss out on the opportunity to snag huge prize purse, the priceless bragging rights and the accolades that ensue. 72hr Filmmaker Showdown will be screened in the Whistler Conference Centre on Tuesday, April 19. The deadline for online registration is Friday, April 8, go here to register.
If you missed out on the quick ticket turnover for the 72hr Filmmaker Showdown, then don’t make the same mistake for the anniversary Screening and Awards Gala, Film 10. Hitting double digits is a big deal for everyone, but especially so for an event that is part of a Festival covering not just arts but sports and music as well. 10 years of incredible films, funny, satirical, dramatic, scary and thrilling, and you can be privy to a unique and rare experience as we screen all the winning films from each of the past 10 years. Assuming its cue from annual Awards Shows from the feature-length film industry, Film 10 has taken the gems from past decade and allocated award categories to be decided upon at the Screening and Awards Gala on Monday, April 18. Judged by a panel of 10-15 Industry Experts and die-hard Filmmaking Fans, “Film 10 Screening & Awards Gala is a celebration of 10 years of filmmaking. It’s a thank you, a pat on the back and a love letter to every filmmaker, finalist or winning film to grace the screen and stage in the last ten years of the 72hr Filmmaker showdown. We’ll be screening every winning film from the last 10 years as well as handing out awards for Best Cinematography, Best Use of Prop, Best Performance, Best Costumes, Best Visual FX & Best Stunts. It’s a party 720 hours in the making,” enthuses Clark.
