PORTILLO, CHILE (June 4, 2013) — As spring and summer temperatures spread across the Northern Hemisphere, more than four feet of snow recently fell at Ski Portillo. The start of the Southern Hemisphere ski season is fast approaching and the fresh powder blanketing Ski Portillo’s slopes is stirring anticipation and excitement amongst skiers in North America.

For the 2013 season, Ski Portillo will continue to deliver the classic ski experience, offering a rare taste of a world rich in culture, community spirit, and awe-inspiring beauty.

As Olympic teams train for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, many of the best skiers in the world will be in Portillo, including athletes from teams in Austria, Canada, and the U.S. Guests can watch famed ski champions like Axsel Svindal from Norway and Tina Maze from Slovenia race on the Roca Jack Downhill course.

On the freeskiing calendar, professional skier, guide, and camp operator Chris Davenport hosts the 10th Annual Superstars Ski Camp at Ski Portillo, August 10 to 17. Open to a maximum of 30 skiers. Professional coaches will include Mike Douglas of Whistler, B.C., Ingrid Backstrom, and Chris Anthony.

Ski Portillo has initiated a four-year plan to renovate the classic Hotel Portillo, a plan led by Santiago-based architects Nicole Labbé and Carolina del Campo. Lenga wood that is native to Chile and cut from certified sustainable forests will be used, and LED lighting will be installed.

Ski Portillo was the first South American ski resort to offer heli skiing, and continues to do so in the surrounding mountains. The resort also has two trained rescue dogs that are internationally recognized for their ability to assist in snow emergencies.

Located approximately two hours northeast of Santiago and accessible via direct flights from many North American cities, Ski Portillo is a great ski destination. It’s set on the shores of the Lake of the Incas and surrounded by 19,000-foot Andean peaks. Portillo’s 14 lifts access terrain catering to skiers of all abilities.
