The Scandinavians may not have invented the first ski (the oldest confirmed ski was found in Russia and dates to 6000 B.C.), but they certainly sit at the center of skiing history. Farmers, hunters, and warriors in that area used skis throughout the Middle Ages, and in the 18th century skis became important tools for local armies. Later in the 19th century, Scandinavians made huge breakthroughs in ski technology by developing camber and sidecut. Nowadays, they’re still at it. The region continues to produce many of the world’s most talented skiers as well as some of the most bombproof and nicely designed ski gear. What follows are five pieces of our favorite Scandinavian kit for this season and next.
