Cody Townsend and the rest of the Salomon Freeski team explained to product managers that they wanted a light ski that didn’t ski like a light ski. Instead of playing around with shapes and sidecuts, Salomon focused on the core of the ski to achieve that goal. Introducing a Spaceframe construction, which is a wood core with woven flax (yes, the same stuff I put in my oatmeal this morning) and carbon, the QST line also sports a sporty sidecut, especially in the 106mm waist. Supposedly, the flax makes the ski 60 percent lighter than fiberglass and doesn’t chatter (or has that “tinny” feel) like carbon. I haven’t been on it yet, but I know flax seeds are good for you. So do they transcend to snow and make you ski better? We’re hoping so.
