New for 2014, Dakine introduces a complete technical outerwear line. Yes, the magicians in Hood River who’ve supplied half the skiing universe with backpacks, gloves, roller bags, and a myriad of innovative accessories now bring you ski jackets and pants.

Everyone needs an insulated, lightweight mid-layer in their clothing quiver to round out a base-layer-shell combo. A good mid-layer helps your body adjust perfectly to varying temps throughout the day, and that’s exactly what the Dakine Pulse hooded jacket does. The inside is filled with 80g poly micro-fill insulation, and the outside features a DWR (durable water repellent) treated melange ripstop fabric with Lycra-bound hood and cuffs. Take it off and it easily stuffs into a small corner of your pack. It can also serve as your outermost layer on a climb or if you’re ripping the hill on a warmer day.

The jacket fits well, so it can double as street wear for everyday life in a variety of climates. Two big hand pockets and a chest pocket can store a pile of essentials, which might come in handy during those small runs to the grocery store, saving you 10 cents if you live in a city that banned plastic bags. Just beware that without careful handling the chest-pocket zipper will snag on the regular. Breathe. Life isn’t perfect. But this jacket is close.

For less than $200, this will be one of the most versatile and constantly used items in your closet this winter.
